Ford has unveiled the livery that will flank its brace of factory Fiesta RS WRCs in the World Rally Championship this season, which lead driver Mikko Hirvonen has said will make the car look ‘aggressive’.
Finn Hirvonen was speaking at the launch of the Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team’s livery at the Autosport International show in Birmingham, UK, earlier today (13 January).
He said: “The new colour scheme fits really well on the Fiesta. The car is small and compact but the colours make it look aggressive and clean. It’s a good look and I like it.”
The new-look colour scheme, which will also be carried on the Fiesta of Hirvonen’s team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala, is the work of the Ford Design Centre in Merkenrich, Germany. Ford’s sales and marketing and public relations departments, plus M-Sport, which runs the works Ford team in the WRC, also had input into the design along with the squad’s marketing partners Abu Dhabi and Castrol.
Gerard Quinn, Ford of Europe’s motorsport boss, said: “Underneath the livery is the car but the livery is of course a very important aspect to that. We wanted to do something exciting and different but also to show kinetic design of the car and create that presence and excitement the Fiesta has and see it brought through.”
The design features more white than Ford’s traditional blue and the bright green of former partner BP Ultimate has been removed.
“We tried to make it subtle in terms of its sporty and performance appeal but at the same time execute it in a subtle way,” continued Quinn. “It does look aggressive in certain parts but in a subtle way. It’s a move away from the traditional blue and it’s been a challenge to work with the colours we’ve got. Hopefully people appreciate it when it’s on the stages, that it will be eye catching and create an iconic image people will remember in the future.”
